New threats to freedom

By Samantha Mayse
(ma real gooood frennnd)

All of the phenomenon I viewed in the Templeton Press videos are real threats to freedom. The
one I found most interesting and pertinent was the video starring Michael Goodwin on the loss
of the freedom to fail. This trend makes a huge impact on my life, all throughout high school
the goal of teachers was not to make kids work but to get them a passing grade. Now that it has
come time for college these kids are having trouble getting work done and keeping up. This
causes kids to become more stressed and more likely to not succeed. If they were allowed to
screw up in high school and take the consequences it would be much better than allowing them
to fail later on in life and lose money and a job because of it. I cannot imagine having people
actually fail be worse than what is going on now. As a high schooler I made many mistakes and
had to suffer the consequences and because of that I now know what I need to do to succeed.
Many kids are not provided that opportunity, mommy and daddy are always there to bail them
out or fix the problem. Teens and young adults need to learn how to deal with their failures
at a younger age so they are not feeling around in the dark when they graduate high school or
college. If this trend continues to accelerate the whole world will have to be dumbed down and
made easier. It will make it more difficult for bosses and people above those who have not had a
chance to fail. They will have to constantly baby them or fire them. If a person continually gets
fired they will eventually give up, it is much better to teach them these skills now than to expect
them to pick them up as they grow. The problem of not allowing kids to fail is part of a bigger
problem, parents babying their children. Kids that grow up in this situation do not have to get
a job, they do not have to do their own laundry, and everything is done for them. This creates a
larger problem of adults that do not know how to take care of themselves or how the real world
works. These adults will have a hard time finding a job after they graduate college and a hard
time at the job once they acquire it. It is amazing to me how many of my peers did not know how
to do laundry before living in the dorms. Just imagine if kids keep getting babied how bad it will
get, they may not know how to write or read because it has all been done for them.

Skyping

Right now I am on Skype with my family. Party is being awkward and T is... silent screaming (?).... in the background....

Miss everyone!

Waiting...

I'm waiting for all my friends to come back to DU. It's lonely here. No Ginger, Sorry, Smiley, Nessie, Pee-tah, or Alice :( They're all off on fun spring breaks.. but I'm just chilling.. all alone....

Just... waiting...

One year anniversary mark

Today is one year mark of this blog! It seems like a pretty natural part of my life now. Not ritual per se. But it's something I do. Weird - one year ago today it was raining... today it was fairly warm and sunny :)

The damn book I'm still reading

The Time Traveler's Wife. I love it! It's beautiful! Getting up there on my list of favourite books! But it just takes so darn long to read...
I got it at the beginning of January. It is halfway through March now. That more than three months. Usually I am WAY done with books at this point. Obviously not.

I'll let you all know when I'm done.

Much exasperation

Today is the start of week 10, the last week of the quarter.
This means... finals start.

My emotions in pictures:

breathe in,
and out,
and in,
and out.

If I survive this to the end, nothing is impossible.

Rain?

I think rain is awesome.

Sure, a lot of people's moods change when it gets grey and rainy outside. But usually they get sad and introverted. When I see it raining, I get so excited! The water cleans and changes the air outside, so it feels refreshing and magical!

Unfortunately, it hasn't rained in a loooong time in Denver. Snow? Yeah, tons of it! But rain? Not all year, I don't think. I could go for a good downpour sometime soon... get out my rainboots and jacket, jump in some puddles, watch drops drip off of buildings and trees. Doesn't that sound pretty?

Early spring days

So it's technically not spring yet. Not until March 21, anyway. But it sure feels like spring here in Denver! Three 60+ degree days in a row. And sunny. And beautiful. You all know how much I love that :)

Me and Ginger went to study outside on Tuesday afternoon (when I still had my crown on, haha). We sat on this little hill that the sun was just pounding on. It was so hot and delightful!!

I hope it stays like this for some sunny skiing this weekend!

My Tie!

Saturday night was the ∆Z winter formal/ blind date function called My Tie. It's called My Tie because a sister picks your name and calls a guy to be your date - but you don't know who he is and he doesn't know who you are! Your sister then gives you a tie of his and you wear it to the house. Then, he finds the girl wearing his tie, like "Oh that's MY TIE, you're my date!"

It was a lot of fun!!! The girl who picked my date picked the dates for Ginger and Smiley, too. All the guys and girls in our group were friends so we all hung out together and danced a lot :)

I LOVE MY DELTA ZETA SISTERS!

Today I'm a princess

Happy March!

I hope you said "white rabbit" this morning. If you don't know the legend/superstition, here's a brief summary:

The most common modern version states that a person should say "rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit", "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit", "rabbit, rabbit" or simply "white rabbits" upon waking on the first day of each new month, and on doing so will receive good luckfor the duration of that month.

I've sure had a good month so far.... no more news, though. I don't want to jinx it!
But for starters, it is a balmy 62 degrees and sunny here in Denver. So beautiful walking around campus. I even wore a dress and my fave Keds today. Oh, and this crown I found.

It's actually Smiley's crown... that I semi-stole. But just for now! She has a major essay due in a few hours that she needs to finish - I'm trying to cheer her up and prevent her from drowning in disaster :)
