Summer in the city

June is rolling away from us and July is roaring right in - you sure can feel it here in the city!
My job search has had its ups and downs and I think I'll soon be settling into a regular sort of schedule for the next six weeks. Meanwhile, I've been trying to live a minimum-cost vacation. That means free (or seriously discounted) events and simple activities, staying with friends, and eating with family. Doesn't that all sound pretty wholesome?

Some of my favorites:
1) Free sunset movies at Bryant Park
check what's playing every Monday, bring a blanket, and enjoy the warm nights!

2) Student nights at Color Me Mine
certain nights have half-off discounts on painting time, perfect for friends!

3) Central Park SummerStage concerts
most concerts are free at venues throughout the city and on the legendary mainstage in Central Park.

4) Shakespeare in the Park
provided you're willing to wait on line all day, you'll get to experience world-class, free plays.

5) The New York Botanical Garden
free entry to this lush, 250-acre garden lets you explore a wide variety of plants along winding paths, under shady trees, and past relaxing fountains.

Now, if anyone can point me towards some free eating establishments, the list would be complete!

Making Jell-O jigglers

With only one box of blue Jell-O (and a questionable sugar-free box), I set out to make my first batch of Jell-O jigglers.
I had the cookie cutters all ready. I just had to figure out the recipe - but I hate having to cut recipes, especially dividing 2 2/3 by 4. Ew. In the end, I just eyeballed it; it was just a smidge over 1/3 cup of hot water for one box of Jell-O. Also for one box, I chose an unmeasured, shallow bowl (something you might put your keys in by the front door; about 1 1/4 inch deep) to pour the Jell-O in. After mixing it up, I stuck it in the fridge to set (you know, how you usually make it) and waited.....

Then came the fun part: cutting out the jiggler shapes! It took quite a bit of wiggling in order to get the shapes to really separate from the rest of the Jell-O, but they came out very well. And tasted delicious! Even though it was firmer than regular Jell-O (in order to hold the shape), I thought it tasted a little bit better than regular - and was more fun to eat :)

Next time, I'll follow the same recipe and make one box of each colour and have little garden of flowers and rainbows! Here is the original recipe if you are interested.

DISPATCH in concert!!!

So here's the lowdown on the best concert by The Biggest Band You've Never Heard Of (in shorthand, because I can't put sentences together):
-reunion tour (first since 2002), big in the '90s, most popular song is "The General"
-performed at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which is this sweet, natural outdoor amphitheatre outside of Denver
-everyone there was about thirty, probably were in high school or college when Dispatch was big
-they sold out three nights in a row at Red Rocks
-the band was so chill, I love their music!
-Sorry and Ginger came along; Smiley missed it 'cause she went home already :(
-here's some pictures!!!!

performing from the middle of the audience - they just appeared!
my ticket :)

It's such a cool venue - like no other place in the world. The band is rockin it because they love where they're performing so the crowd is rockin it, too, and it's just the best concert you've ever been too. Can't wait for MORE concerts at Red Rocks in the future!

Departing for the summer

This is my last post from Denver guys! At least for three months, anyway. I'm at the airport now, Sorry and I are checked in about to go through security (joy).
It's been a great last week in the Mile High City. Seriously, seriously can't wait to be back in September!!! Next school year is going to be even better!

I can't believe I've only been in college one year - it seems like so much longer and so much shorter at the same time. The year flew by fast, it was so fun! But I also feel like this has been my life forever (obviously it hasnt') because I'm so used to it already.

Some of my best friends have been made in just these past nine months at DU. I am so thankful for everyone I've met and knew that next year is going to be just as wonderful, if not more :)
