Derby Days

Sigma Chi's annual philanthropy that raises money to support the Huntsman Cancer Institute is not your typical college week. All year, the upperclassmen have been telling us frosh about Derby Days - an entire week full of insane events (aka: one giant party) hosted by ∑X. It's a competition between the sororities and in the end, only one can reign supreme....

It started out with cooler painting.

ours. we won.

The next day was Manhunt. It started at 9 pm so it was in the dark and all the girls wore black. Then we had to run around campus and find all the hidden Sigma Chi boys. They were hidden very well! Like, up in trees and sh*t!
ginger, sorry, and me before manhunt

On Tuesday, there was the Miss Derby Pageant. One of our Miss DZ was my really good friend Unicorn. She did such a class pageant presentation; she freakin sang opera for her talent!

Wednesday was the best day. We worked for weeks on a dance to a medley of sweeeeet songs. When we finally performed, we completely wowed the crowed - it felt awesome. All our hard worked paid off :) Also, we had the coolest shirts that said: TEACH ME HOW TO DERBY. They were a big surprise and we revealed them at the dance.
after the dance (but you can read them better)

We also won the dance.
Thursday was the last competition, Derby Runs, which is a potentially dangerous activity where sorority girls rush at the Sigma Chi freshmen and rip their clothes off as fast as they can (it's true!). I did not attend this particular event, and therefore can't vouch for the insanity, but those who were there (and even a freshman himself!) told me it was very scary and very fast. We won this, too.
our crazy team at derby runs

Thursday night also happened to be Cinqo De Mayo, a good excuse for a party. It was plain loco.
Friday morning was a special Breakfast event for the ∆Z girls at a ∑X brothers' house. Just a darn great way to spend the morning after Cindo De Mayo. I mean it.
making pancakes very early in the morning for a house-full of hungry fraternity boys and sorority girls. while country music blared. and bacon grease spattered my arm.

me and unicorn at the breakfast house. the stupid hat i'm wearing is a plastic "derby" which you win points for it you steal it off the head of a sigma chi boy.

The very last event was Friday night. It was a concert/party called Bright & Tight at the Gothic Theatre. Dress code was bright. And tight. It was here that they announced the overall winner of Derby Days. Can you guess who it might be? DELTA ZETA!!!!!!!! HELL YEAH!!! WE WON!!!!!

As always, the ladies of ∆Z were classy, talented, and in-it-to-win-it! Who else could have taken the cake - or in light of Cinqo De Mayo, the whole enchilada - and won Derby Days??! I'm gonna say it once more because it's fun: WE WON DERBY DAYS 2011!
by my adoptive big sis, été

A whole week of fun... and now it's over :( Am I glad? Yes, a little, because now I can return to a normal sleep pattern ;) Nostalgic? Indeed, because there was something to do every night with the greatest girls (and guys) on campus! Excited? Of course, because next year is going to be even better!

xxo, S
